What a Certificate of Destruction actually confirms

A Certificate of Destruction is a written document confirming that specific items — metal, machinery, vehicles, or other materials — were permanently destroyed and recycled. It exists to prove those items can never be reassembled, reused, or resold under someone else's name. In other words, it's your paper trail that the job was actually finished.

Why it matters in South Africa

Anyone dealing in second-hand goods, including scrap metal dealers and recyclers, must register with the South African Police Service. For certain waste streams — e-waste is a priority category under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA) — documented, trackable disposal isn't just good practice, it's expected. A Certificate of Destruction gives you a record that lines up with those expectations.

When you should ask for one

• Insurance claims and asset write-offs — proof the asset is gone for good, not sitting in someone's shed.
• Decommissioned business equipment — for your own compliance and financial records.
• Vehicles and machinery — confirming a written-off vehicle can't re-enter circulation.
